Hi, my name is Jhaicob Estil-Sauveur and I am a Realtor for Gold Standard Realty. I get asked a lot about how to become an agent and if it's a really hard process, but to become an agent is a lot simpler than people think.
The first step to becoming a Real Estate agent in New Jersey is to go to school, I know that it doesn't sound so great but thankfully you only need to go for 75 hours. Depending on the school they split up that time between the span of 3 to 4 weeks, if you're a real go-getter then you can maybe even get it done in about 2 or 2 and a half weeks and if you need more time then you can also go longer. There are real estate schools all over so just apply to one, pay the school and start studying.
Once you get through all your 75 hours then you have to take two tests. One is the school test which can be free up to a certain time depending on the school you choose to go to. After you pass then you have to take the state test which you have to pay a fee of $45 every time you take it. Which can be a little difficult because of the way they word the questions. Again, this is to become an agent in New Jersey, in other states the fee and amount of hours may vary.
Once you passed the New Jersey state real estate exam then all that's left is to go get your fingerprinting and back ground check done, as well as find an office to work in. Remember, you are only licensed in New Jersey so you cannot act as an agent in a different state unless you go through the process again in that other state.
Looking for an office should be pretty simple but I do encourage you to stop by Gold Standard Realty. We give you hands on training and help you through every process. We are family and we like to make sure that everyone is taken cared of. I'm sure you know the saying, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". So let us teach you and help you grow to be an amazing agent.
Congratulations, now you are a Real Estate agent, so that wasn't too hard. The hard part is keeping the license after you get it. A lot of people have gotten their license but realized that maybe it wasn't for them and just let their licenses expire. That's the thing about this business, there is barely, if any, instant gratification. You have to work and put time into it just like if you are a business owner because if you don't work then there won't be any money in it.
If you don't want the pressure of feeling like you own your own business then you can always be a referral agent. You still have to go through all the same steps that I mentioned before to be licensed as one. As a referral agent, the only thing you would have to do is refer, so if you refer a client to one of your co-workers or any other agent and that client closes on buying, selling or renting of a property then you will obtain 25% of whatever commission is made.
So that's how it's done, you can become an agent within a month. Once again, becoming an agent is pretty simple but staying an agent is the hard part.
